Scherzer breezed past Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, drawing 27 of the 30 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Analysis: Scherzer earned the NL honor last year with Washington and the 2013 American League prize with Detroit. He became the 10th pitcher with at least three Cy Youngs. Scherzer was 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA and a league-leading 268 strikeouts for the NL East champion Nationals.

Scherzer struck out one, ending the game with a 3.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the season. Analysis: The Washington ace was called upon to protect a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning and set down the first two hitters before giving up three straight hits and later being victimized by a blown call that led to two more runs. It's a sour ending to another otherwise splendid season for Scherzer, who eclipsed 250 strikeouts for a fourth straight year and won 16 games for the fifth time in the past six campaigns.
Oct. 9 5:04 PM PT6:04 PM MT7:04 PM CT8:04 PM ET20:04 ET0:04 GMT8:04 5:04 PM MST7:04 PM EST7:34 PM VEN4:04 UAE (+1)7:04 PM CT-Max Scherzer allowed one run on one hit and three walks in 6.1 innings as the Washington Nationals lost to the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Monday. Scherzer struck out seven, ending the game with a 1.42 ERA and 0.63 WHIP on the season. Analysis: Scherzer was dominant in his return from a right hamstring injury, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh. But just like in Game 1, when Chicago was held hitless into the sixth by Stephen Strasburg, the World Series champion Cubs showed off their resilience on the way to a stirring victory. Scherzer should be fine if he gets another chance to pitch in the playoffs.

Rizzo said during a workout at Nationals Park that the team wants Scherzer ''as close to 100 percent as we can get him.''

Scherzer then began to throw a full-count pitch, but abruptly stopped when time was called. Washington manager Dusty Baker, pitching coach Mike Maddux and team trainers visited the mound and quickly took out Scherzer.

He has struck out 253 this season, only the fourth player in big league history to reach that figure in four straight seasons The others are Ferguson Jenkins, Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson - all Hall of Famers.

Analysis: A stress fracture in the knuckle of the ring finger on his pitching hand slowed Scherzer's development this spring and caused him to grip his fastball with the middle three fingers on to instead of the usual index and middle fingers as a means to avoid pain. Scherzer will make two more starts before the regular season begins, but the NL Cy Young award winner won't be the opening day starter. "Right now we've kind of got Max slated as the No. 3 starter," Dusty Baker said.
