Dillard followed his father's footsteps to the Palouse, signing with the Cougars as a developmental offensive tackle after playing his prep ball on the other side of the mountains, closer to the rival University of Washington campus.
He redshirted his first year on campus to get stronger and saw limited action the next season, playing in just three games before earning the starting left tackle job as a redshirt sophomore. It was a role Dillard would not relinquish over the next three seasons, earning him third-team All-Pac-12 honors after his junior season and first-team all-conference accolades as a senior.
Dillard's light feet earned him the respect of Pac-12 coaches and media but with conference experiencing a down year among defensive linemen in 2018, some wanted to see Dillard prove just as effective against competition at the Senior Bowl - which he accomplished - before stamping him with a first-round grade.
Simply put, Dillard possesses the best feet of any offensive lineman in the 2019 draft. He dances out of his stance in pass protection, easily maintaining a square obstacle to speed rushers hoping to attack off the blind side. Further, Dillard shows a ballerina's balance when pulling or climbing to the second level, fluidly changing direction to seal off linebackers from the action.
Stellar performance at the Senior Bowl and Combine eased legitimate concerns some had about the level of competition amid Pac-12 pass rushers and schematic restraints from WSU's pass-happy "Air-Raid" attack.
While Dillard's footwork will earn him a first-round selection, critics will point out that he plays with more finesse than force as a blocker, raising some question as to his fit for clubs hoping to run the ball as often as they pass. He needs to show greater urgency and power in his hands to control edge rushers, sealing them off rather than generating movement.
Inconsistent hand placement, too often allowing them to rise, leaving him susceptible to bull rushers and cross chops. Average arm length (33 1/2").
Projection: First Round
